According to the Mirror, Manchester City are nearing a deal with Napoli for Jorginho. The 26-year-old will cost the Sky Blues around £46.5m and will be somewhat of a replacement for Yaya Toure who was released this summer. Pep Guardiola doesn’t appear to be doing a lot of business ahead of next season, but Jorginho is a player who he’s keen to sign.
With Toure having left the club at the end of his contract and Fernandinho 33 years of age, City need a long-term replacement in midfield. They need a combative player who is composed on the ball and can marry up the responsibilities of protecting the backline, nullifying the opposition in the middle of the park and retaining possession. Jorginho could be that player.
The Brazilian-born Italian international averaged 97 passes-per-game with a 90% pass accuracy, while creating 49 chances and averaging a tackle or interception every 24 minutes. He has all the attributes Guardiola has been looking for and will improve an already stellar midfield containing Ilkay Gundogan, Fernandinho, Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva.
Confirmation of Jorginho’s move to City could be made this week now the fee appears to have been agreed.
