According to The S*n, Liverpool and Manchester City are interested in Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon who is leaving the club this summer. The 40-year-old’s contract is up in the coming weeks, but he recently announced he’ll be open to joining a new club which has put a number of suitors on alert.
Buffon joined Juventus from Parma in 2001 and has gone on to make over 650 appearances in all competitions for the Old Lady. He’s won nine Serie A titles and four Coppa Italias during his time in Turin. The Italian shot-stopper was expected to hang up his gloves at the end of the campaign, but he appears keen to prolong his career.
In a recent interview, Buffon admitted he still wants to play at a high level after making a u-turn on his decision to fully retire. He added he will make a definitive decision on his next move in the coming days but has revealed plenty of offers have come his way which has changed his outlook.
“Up until 15 days ago, it was certain and well-known that I would stop playing. Now I have received some proposals and exciting challenges, both on the field and off it. The most important for staying on the pitch was proposed to me by (Juventus chairman Andrea) Agnelli.
“Over the next three days, full of emotion, I will after two or three days of reflection make a definitive decision. I don’t want to play in the lower leagues, I’m too competitive. I’ll try to follow whatever calls to my soul and my nature.”
When asked about Premier League offers, he replied: “I said that I received a few proposals, very interesting ones, both for on the field and off it. Next week, once everything has calmed down a little bit, I will decide what I think is best for me.
“There’s no point now betting on where I could go. If I were to continue, I’d want to challenge for big honours, because that’s what I live for and in a way it’s my limitation too.”
Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has an uncertain future after losing his place in the first-team this season. Manchester City’s Claudio Bravo could also be on the move this summer as he’s spent the campaign on the periphery too.
