Middlesbrough fans are unsure why the club are letting Adam Clayton go. The player played a pivotal role in their promotion-winning season in 2015/15 and was one of the club best performers in the Premier League last season.
However, he was frozen out by Garry Monk earlier in the season and Clayton has barely played for the club in the past few weeks. Tony Pulis has recently recalled him to the team but reports have emerged suggesting that the player’s future does not lie at the Riverside Stadium.
That being said, Celtic should definitely make the move to sign him. If Brendan Rodger‘s Celtic side are interested in Jack Rodwell as reports claimed, I think it would make a lot sense for the Bhoys to ignore that deal and sign Clayton instead. The 29-year-old is a much more accomplished replacement in the central midfield than Rodwell. Clayton is worth spending some wager on as he’s priced at 4/1 to sign for Celtic, while it’s around 9/1 for Rodwell to join the Scottish champions this winter via NetBet Sport.
Clayton is a no-nonsense calibre of player although his playing style is does not really look that impressive but he goes about his business and tidies things up in the middle of park. Clayton is able to do the defensive work of the central midfield role very well and he can even help going forward too, driving the Bhoys along.
If Rodgers is looking for a new central midfielder this January – as reports suggest in Rodwell – he would be better off trying to poach Adam Clayton from Middlesbrough instead. The former Huddersfield man – rated at just £2.70m on Transfermarkt – is surely likely to be available on the cheap as Pulis looks to generate some funds for his own players.
