Former Celtic forward Kris Commons believes the Bhoys manager Brendan Rodgers will resist the calls to spend big money on players in the upcoming January transfer window, claiming that his side could spend up to £20million on new signings.
The former Scotland international is of the opinion that there is no guarantee that the player will be as good as the one the club have in their ranks.
Commons who’s now a pundit for Sky Sports said as quoted by the Evening Times:
“He could invest £10million on a player, £20million on a player, but that kind of player is not going to guarantee what the players he has can guarantee now.”
“Listen, Brendan will be the first to say ‘this is what I need, this is what I’ve got’. If he loses a player he will need someone.”
He also seemed to have a go at the money that is spent on new players who have vastly high transfer fees, and that sometimes spending huge money isn’t the answer to solving a team’s problems.
“But spending money in this day and age, and I’m talking £20million on a central defender, could mean a bang average player.”
Celtic have signed two players so far in January, with Marvin Compper arriving the club from Leipzig and Lewis Morgan joining the Hoops from St. Mirren, although Morgan is staying with the Paisley on-loan until the end of the season.
The club could be in the market for a replacement for Stuart Armstrong, who is reportedly set to miss the next month of games after undergoing a hernia operation in Germany on Monday.
Celtic, with new winter signing Marvin Compper already in out injured, return to domestic action after their winter break in Dubai on Saturday, as they begin to the defence of the Scottish Cup with a home clash
