Aston Villa are reportedly considering a move for Manchester United veteran midfielder Michael Carrick but have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the former England international, according to ESPN.
The news website claims that Leicester City and West Bromwich Albion have both made enquiries to sign the 36-year-old due to his lack of game-time at Old Trafford.
Despite lack of game time, it is understood that the Englishman has made strong decision to commit his future with the Red Devils and ignore interest from interested clubs.
The report from ESPN adds that Carrick is set to stay with Jose Mourinho‘s side and that he is currently coaching their Manchester United’s Under-14s side as he prepares for life after his playing career.
He has turned out a highly successful career since making his debut in 1999 and played an important role in helping United win the Champions League in the 2007/08 season.
The veteran midfielder is United’s longest-serving player, having joined Man United in 2006, and replaces Wayne Rooney in the role after his compatriot move to Everton last summer.
Michael Carrick good move for Aston Villa?
He can’t have too long left to offer in his playing career as he reaches the latter stages, but he would be a sensational signing if Steve Bruce signed him in January.
Carrick still managed 38 appearances last season for the Red Devils and would look a class above in the Championship.
Bruce already have in his rank, a superb leader in John Terry – who joined The Clarets and Blues last the summer – and pulling off a sensational deal for Carrick would give the dressing room two elite players.

This deal never seemed likely and the midfielder’s desire to stay at Old Trafford will crush any possibility.
He is on the fringes of United squad and seems content playing in his current position at the club, but a calf injury has kept him out of contention recently.
Aston Villa can move into fourth in the league table if they win at home on Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday but that’s if Cardiff City get better of Bristol City anyway.
