Without any doubts, this summer will be a busy one for Tottenham Hotspur as they have not been able to improve both defensively and in attack from the previous season. Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is believed to have been setting his gaze on some new attacking quality in a bid to boost his side and has been linked with some star players recently. But two players who have constantly been linked with a move to White Hart Lane are Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha and Napoli’s Dries Mertens. The duo are in terrific form this season in two completely different leagues. So the questions is, who should the Argentine boss go for?

Obviously, Mertens who has recorded a total of 25 goals in 12 assists in all competition this season is right up there with the best in Europe making him a wonderful option but that is just a part of the reason why Pochettino should spend on the Belgian forward this season. The 29-year-old is capable of playing as a lone striker or also on the wing, he is a versatile player who can create superb and finish chances consistently. Pochettino loves players who are versatile and signing him would mean that he would occupy one of the flanks alongside Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen just in behind Harry Kane.

Harry Kane has been on fire for the North London side this season and is there’s no player in the team who can hijack his space in the Spurs starting XI. But there is a little cover for him in the striker’s position, with Tottenham summer signing Vincent Janssen, failing to meet up with tasks in his debut season in the Premier League. Therefore, Tottenham might consider bring in new acquisitions this summer who can walk straight into the team and replace the 29-year-old for their title-run next season.

Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha

Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha, on the other hand, the 24-year-old has been one of the most consistent player for the Eagles this season. This campaign, he has seen the net 6 times and created 9 chances for a relegation threatened side. Looking at his age and experience in the EPL, he could be worth spending the money, but having failed to realize his potential early in his career under pressure at Old Trafford, he is not really a risk worth taking.

Having talked about this, Mauricio Pochettino needs to bring in quality additions to the White Hart Lane this summer and though Zaha has what it takes to be effective in their new system, Mertens looks as far better option at the moment for the Spurs. The 29-year-old is his best form and looking for a greener pasture. With his style of play closely matching that of Tottenham’s, it would be a wise move moving in for Dries Mertens instead of Wilfried Zaha this summer.

Do you think Dries Mertens is the right choice for Pochettino this summer?
