The Christmas period is here once again. A time of goodwill to all men and women. But Christmas to some family base on records, it’s time for arguments and bitterness which has led us to take a look back at the biggest Premier League flops of the season.
These players are ones everyone expected so much from for the 2018/19 season, surprisingly for everyone, the players on this list have delivered so little.
5 – Rachid Ghezzal
Rachid Ghezzal was widely tipped as Riyad Mahrez’s replacement at Leicester City and so far has not lived up to that hype. Ghezzal is left-footed, tricky and loves to cut in from the right-wing but the Algerian international along with a few Leicester players this season performances have been below par.
Ghezzal is a talented midfielder who is yet to show it with any end product for the Foxes and his side and fans will need to see some significant improvement from him at the turn of the New Year.
4 – Mesut Ozil
Ozil’s had a pretty tough summer with Germany failing at the World Cup in Russia, crashing out at the group stage and things have only fot worse for him since then. The Arsenal playmaker retired from international football in a heap of controversy before returning to Arsenal for the new season.
The German is earning £350k-a-week at Arsenal but despite this huge weekly wages, he is failing to make an impression on new Gunners boss Unai Emery, and he has suffered from a few injury problems.
His new bumper pay contract provided such promise in January but so far, Ozil has failed to live up to the expectations of the club and fans.
3 – Alvaro Morata
It is difficult for one to forget the summer of 2017 when Chelsea forked out £60 million to bring Morata from Real Madrid to Stamford Bridge, but it is just 18 months since he joined the Blues. He did proved to be worth this transfer fee with 10 league goals by Boxing Day but since the year so far, he has been a real dissapointment for the club.
The year has not been a favourable one for the striker and according to reports now, the Blues are reportedly keen on signing Callum Wilson in January, which is a clear sign on how disappointed they are with the player.
2 – Fred
Jose Mourinho’s big summer signing has done nothing notable at Old Trafford since he joined the club and he has even found himself left out of the matchday squad on several occasions. Mourinho was lamenting he had limited funds in the summer to improve his defence yet he sanctioned £50m on Fred who has not improved the team in anyway this season.
Now the Portuguese gaffer is gone, we could see a new Fred under a new managerial tutelage, but so far, he has performed way below the standards expected when he signed.
1 – Romelu Lukaku
How bad has Romelu Lukaku been this season! Genuinely woeful and a hindrance to United every time they go forward. He seemed to have a decent relationship with Mourinho but his football has been so poor so far this season and he has shown no sign of repaying the £75m that United invested in him. Hopefully Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be able to teach him a thing or two in front of goal.
