Manchester United were quite a force in the Premier League when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge. The British manager was appointed manager of Manchester United in November 1986. During his 26 years with Manchester United he won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and two UEFA Champions League titles. He was knighted in the 1999 Queen’s Birthday Honours list, for his services to the game.
Below are the three unforgettable matches of Manchester United when Sir Alex Ferguson was managing at the club.
Sheffield Wednesday (1993)
Manchester United came close to winning the 1991-92 Premier League title only to lose it in the end to Leeds United by 4 points. The next season of 1992-93 looked to be slipping from their hands too when they went four games without a victory. This put Aston Villa on top of the table, and United looked to be losing the home game against Sheffield Wednesday too when John Sheridan scored a goal first.
Surprisingly, Manchester United won that game. Steve Bruce scored a goal in the 85th minute to bring the Red Devils back in the game. Then, he added one another in the 90th minute to get a brilliant comeback victory for United. United bagged the crucial three points. And after this victory, United won all their five remaining matches and thus won the league title by the difference of 10 points with Aston Villa.
Arsenal (2011)
Arsenal and Manchester United battled each other during the early part of the 2011-12 season. This was not an important match in terms of winning the league title. However, it was a match of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal v Sir Alex Ferguson’s United, and that can never be a less important match.
For Wenger, this match proved to be a lasting scar. Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick while Ashley Young added two with one goal each came for Nani, Park Ji-sung and Danny Welbeck. This way Manchester United won the game by 8-2, the biggest victory of Sir Alex against his fiercest rival Arsene Wenger.
Tottenham Hotspur (1999)
The 1998-99 season was the treble winning season for Manchester United. They achieved an unparalleled feat in English football. However, many forget now that United had dangerously come close to losing the league title. A string of bad results in April and May had allowed Arsenal to catch up with the Red Devils. Therefore, the last match against the Spurs was very important for United. The Red Devils looked to be losing the game when Les Ferdinand got the lead for Tottenham.
However, United were not going to give up. David Beckham scored a goal just before the halftime. Then Andy Cole lobbed in one as well in the second half, giving them the important victory. After ten days, the FA Cup and the Champions League titles came to Old Trafford too.
