According to Sky in Italy, Chelsea are in talks with Atletico Madrid over defender Stefan Savic. The 27-year-old has become a regular with the Rojiblancos since joining in 2015 from Fiorentina. Chelsea are looking to bolster their backline as the future of David Luiz is unknown.

Luiz had a fallout with manager Antonio Conte last season and has just 12 months on his deal at Stamford Bridge. The Brazilian international spent 2017/18 on the periphery, making just 10 Premier League appearances, and could be on his way out as a result.

With Gary Cahill, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen likely to be retained by Chelsea this summer, they will need a new face in the backline. Savic could be that man, six years after he exited the Premier League following a forgettable spell at Manchester City.

The Montenegro international is a different player now. He’s made 110 appearances in all competitions for Atleti in the last three years and helped them win the Europa League last season. Manager Diego Simeone will likely want to keep the centre-back, so Chelsea might struggle convince him to sell.

Juventus’ interest could prove a stumbling block too. Sky in Italy report that the Serie A champions want to bring Savic back to Italy. The Old Lady have an ageing backline, with Giorgio Chiellini (33), Andrea Barzagli (37), Mehdi Benatia (31) and Benedikh Howedes (30) no longer spring chickens, so Chelsea have a tough task fending off Juve’s interest and reaching an agreement with Atleti.
