Manchester United’s hopes of agreeing a deal for Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale have hit a major stumbling block, with the Telegraph reporting that Bayern Munich have entered the race for his signature.

In the aftermath of Real’s Champions League final victory over Liverpool, the 28-year-old hinted he could depart the Santiago Bernabeu this summer due to a lack of playing time. United were said to be leading the chase for his signature, but Bayern are looking to hijack the deal.

Bale joined Real from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013 and has gone on to make 189 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating 147 goals. The Welsh international has won four Champions League titles, one Liga title and one Copa Del Rey during his five years in Spain, but his future is uncertain.

The former Southampton man has been left frustrated with a lack of playing time under Zinedine Zidane this season, after being named on the bench in five of their six Champions League knockout games, including the final. He won’t be cheap, however, as Real are likely to want a return on the £85m they spent to sign Bale, let alone a suitor having to match the 28-year-old’s £350k-per-week wages.

United have the money to sign Bale, but his injury problems and age might make them hesitant to put all their eggs into one basket. Bayern could free up some funds if they sell Real Madrid and Chelsea-target Robert Lewandowski this summer.
