Liverpool reached the final of the Champions League despite a 4-2 defeat to AS Roma on Wednesday night, having beaten the Serie A side 5-2 in the home leg.
Jurgen Klopp‘s men went through by a 7-6 aggregate scoreline and will now face defending champions Real Madrid in Kyiv.
Liverpool have got to prove themselves in the final
Since Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2005, the Merseysiders have struggled to win much silverware.
They’ve only won the 2005/06 FA Cup and 2011/12 League Cup in the last 13 years but could add a European title to the list, which would make it worth the wait.
The Reds have now reached their third cup final under Klopp (League Cup and Europa League in 2015/16) and will be desperate to finally win one.
Liverpool should be wary against Real in the final after conceding six times against the Giallorossi in the semis.
AS Roma unlucky with refereeing decisions
Roma needed to put in a big performance to overturn the deficit on Wednesday and they didn’t disappoint.
The Serie A could have taken the game to extra-time had refereeing decisions gone their way.
Striker Edin Dzeko was fouled in the box by Liverpool ‘keeper Loris Karius, but the assistant referee wrongly judged him to be offside.
Shortly after, Stephan El Shaarawy’s effort on goal was deflected over by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s hand, although no Roma player asked for a penalty.
Had decisions gone their way on the night, it could well have been Roma in the final.
Liverpool need a stronger defensive performance
Liverpool may have reached the final of the Champions League final, but their defensive performance was far from being impressive against Roma, with six goals conceded.
The Reds looked particularly weak on the right-hand side where Alexander-Arnold was stationed, and the teenager needs better positional sense ahead of the final in Kyiv.
The young fullback has been found out against fast-paced attackers, such as Wilfried Zaha and Marcus Rashford this season, and could have a difficult night against Cristiano Ronaldo, Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale unless he balances the offensive and defensive sides to his game.
