According to Spanish news outlet AS, Celtic have joined Newcastle United in the race for Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres, reports Teamtalk.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker has confirmed his intentions to leave Atleti this summer but would continue with his football career elsewhere.

This has opened the door for Celtic to swoop in and hijack a move for the 34-year-old who has enjoyed a highly-decorated career for club and country.

After a two-year loan spell Torres joined Diego Simeone’s side from AC Milan on a permanent deal in 2016 and has gone on to make 79 appearances in all competitions.

Torres is a hard-working striker, known for his willingness to put pressure on defenders and has fantastic link-up play to create chances for his teammates.  He’s also prolific in front of goal.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is keen on a new centre-forward this summer as the Hoops look set to miss out on Odsonne Edouard who has spent the season on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

Their bid to sign Torres wouldn’t be easy, however, as they face strong competition from Newcastle United. The Premier League side will have a bigger wage budget to meet the Spanish international’s £67k-per-week salary.
