According to a report, Celtic and Rangers are locked a two-way battle to sign Sunderland central midfielder Ethan Robson for a bargain price.

The report is according to The Scottish Sun that claimed the Glasgow giants are both closely monitoring the 21-year-old situation with the Black Cats as they eye a cut-price to sign him when his contract expires in the summer.

It is said that the Championship side valued their player at around £2million but can be hijacked from the Stadium of Light in a few months’ time for as low as £150,000 in training compensation.

The midfielder has registered six first-team appearances for Sunderland, including league starts against Birmingham and Hull City in January, after he graduated through the club’s ranks and was Sunderland’s under-23 captain.

However, Robson has not agreed a new contract to commit his long-time future with the club, raising interest in other clubs signing him up this summer.

Rangers were the busier side in January but the duo results on Saturday shows there are still need for new bloods whether through the transfer market or coaching on the training ground.

Celtic have greater resources, but he will be guaranteed a quicker pathway to the first-team fold at Ibrox. Robson is a player of great potential who is at an age when he needs to be playing regularly. He has showed in recent starts that he can cut it in the English second tier, and could be a great capture for either of the Scottish big hitters.
