At this stage, it doesn’t look like Manchester United be getting to see Antoine Griezmann in Red and Black jersey anymore, but the well-used chequebook is sure to come out with a return to the Champions League next season.
Jose Mourinho’s side have been linked with many players around the Europe this summer but have only completed the signing of the Swedish international defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica on a four-year deal. The two clubs agreed a fee understood to be €35m (£31m).
That being said, there are still some areas in the squad that needs to be checked and who might come fill the void space in the squad? Here is a list of potential candidates the Red Devils might sign before the end of the summer.
STEFAN DE VRIJ (LAZIO)
It’s right to say United enjoyed a brilliant run last season, but Mourinho deserves credit for overseeing a respectable defensive record – 29 goals conceded in 28 Premier League games – with a backline which didn’t show great confidence.
Eric Bailly and Antonio Valencia enjoyed brilliant runs last season but upgrades are required elsewhere, and De Vrij is someone they should be looking at as they seek to challenge for the title.
The Dutchman, who was linked with a move to Old Trafford during Louis van Gaal’s time in charge, may be available for a cut-price fee as he enters the final year of his Lazio deal. Commanding, clever and composed, he could be just the right player Jose Mourinho is after.
