There have been reports making rounds that Manchester United are looking to sign Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier. The 23-year-old signed a five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur in a £4 million transfer in 2014 and has grown to become an integral part Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
Jose Mourinho is evidently a huge fan of the defender, who in the past season, has become one of the best in his position across the country. Dier might come a bit expensive but that would not be an issue as the United has a lot in their coffer.
But what does Tottenham stand to gain in selling their Midfielder other than to fortify a rivals team?
Absolutely nothing. Dier has been outstanding at White Hart Lane ever since he moved there and has become a huge threat to opposition. His success with the Spurs has earned the midfielder a spot on the England international team.
Dier, a versatile player, is not just as a midfielder but can also play as centre-back and right-back. His style of play goes well with the preferred style of the team. He may have been less intense in recent times but his impact in the team cannot be overlooked.
The £70,000-a-week midfielder had a huge impact last season as a midfielder, where he helped Spurs to top four finish in the Premier League. He’s had little chance to prove himself this season as he has been inconsistent, with summer signing Moussa Dembele and Victor Wanyama taking the spotlight away from him. Injuries sustained in the defensive line caused him to miss out a few matches.
But at 23, he has the whole of his career ahead of him and considering the rate at which he has grown in the past two years, he is bound for greater height. Having his kind in a team with the ability to play in diversified roles can only be a great blessing to the team.
United will come with an irresistible offer but Tottenham is not obligated to sell being a club of high repute. Spurs would not want to repeat the mistake they made when they sold Micheal Carrick to United in 2006 where the midfielder has now developed into one of the best in the game. When United comes calling for Dier, Pochettino should have no second thought in sending them back as they are now rich enough to say no
