Manchester United are now a shadow of what they used to be under sir Alex Ferguson. The club has lost touch, spark, the fear factor, their winning mentality, confidence, creativity and entertainment. Their decline has been gradual since the retirement of their most decorated manager but has been more pronounced by the media.
The once upon title winning club is not even worth to be categorized as title contenders given the rate of their decline right now. Money has been spent on big players, top coaches have been brought in but it seems to be getting worst. None of the big players signed lived up to expectations.
And presently they are experiencing their worst start to the season in 27 years after the draw at Old Trafford against West Ham. The hammers took the lead before Zlatan Ibrahimovic got the equalizer and as the norm these days the Reds could not get the winning goal. They are now sixth on the table with 20 points from 13 matches – 11 points behind leader Chelsea and 8 points off the top four -their lowest in the last two decades.
Under Sir Fergie, United rarely lose to bottom teams, including those in the top half of the league table. But these days they find it difficult to win such games. After 13 league games, both David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal have better records than Jose Mourinho. They have drawn five of their last seven matches
The Portuguese coach has failed to turn the club around as expected but it has been a serious decline than envisaged. The former Real Madrid and Chelsea coach seems to have his magical touch. He was sent to stands in the match against West Ham , making it the second time in one month that he would be sent off.
The stats show United are in decline. They have failed to win four league games consecutively at Old Trafford for the first time since February 1990 and their drawn four league games at home for the first time since December 1980. They were second at this stage last season under Van Gaal.
The club’s hierarchy have been keeping mute but unless things turn around for good, Mourinho’s future at the club in doubt. The big question however, remains who replaces him at the club?
