Leigh Griffiths has delivered a major update to the Glasgow Evening Times that he will be back to his best for Celtic in time for next season.
Signed from Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2014, the centre-forward has gone on to make 178 appearances in all competitions, scoring an impressive 97 goals.
The 27-year-old hasn’t been in his best form this season, however, and only recently returned from a calf injury that kept him out for two months.
At his best, Griffiths is arguably Scotland’s most lethal striker, having scored 40 goals in 2015-16 under former Hoops boss Ronny Deila.
He’s only registered eight in 20 Scottish Premiership appearances this season but is certain he will be “back to his best” in 2018/19.
Griffiths said:
“I am hoping the best is still to come. With the muscle being released now and unblocked it is going to give me a lot more movement in my legs.”
“Hopefully working with manager and fitness staff means that come pre-season I will be flying and back to my best.”
The Scotland international’s injury update is precisely what fans wanted to hear. Moussa Dembele looks unlikely to remain at Celtic for a third season and therefore a fully-fit Griffiths is needed to replace him.
Bhoys manager Brendan Rodgers does also have Odsonne Edouard on loan from Paris Saint-Germain who can shoulder some of the scoring burden.
Nevertheless, it’s very encouraging Griffiths isn’t resting on his laurels and acknowledges this season hasn’t gone to plan.
