Real Madrid have struggled this campaign, performing well below-par after such highs last season. Los Blancos are out of the title race and were eliminated in the Copa Del Rey at the quarter-final stage.
Manager Zinedine Zidane has come under scrutiny as a result, although Real’s successful 2016/17 season could well convince the hierarchy to allow him to strengthen the squad this summer, as they’ve seen what he can do.
The defence, in particular, has been a huge issue. Despite boasting Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane at the heart of the backline, the European champions are in desperate need of new blood.
According to reports, AC Milan captain Leonardo Bonucci and Chelsea’s David Luiz are targets this summer, but it remains to be seen who would be a better fit.
Leonardo Bonucci
The Italian defender’s big-money move from Juventus hasn’t gone as planned. Bonucci has struggled to find his feet at the San Siro, failing to marshal the backline and keep goals out.
His performances have improved in recent weeks, largely thanks to the influence of manager Gennaro Gattuso, but the centre-back will still be deemed as a huge flop come the end of the season.
That being said, one of the main reason behind his demise has been lack of a reliable partner. During Bonucci’s time at Juve, he found real success playing alongside experienced mainstays in Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli.
Therefore, one could sense he might regain his form playing alongside the mercurial defensive figure of Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid.
David Luiz
Chelsea’s David Luiz is facing a torrid situation at Stamford Bridge under Antonio Conte, who has been a reason behind his dip in form this season.
Luiz was involved in a spat with the former Juventus boss earlier in the campaign which resulted in him being dropped from the squad.
The former Paris Saint-Germain defender has played in just 10 Premier League matches this season and could be moved on this summer as a result.
Luiz can thrive if given the responsibility. The Brazilian is known for his incredible work ethic and impressive commitment which drives him and his team, week in week out.
The 30-year-old could be a good option to Real Madrid next season, largely because of his no-nonsense style and undying passion of football.
Football Weeks‘ view
Both Leonardo Bonucci and David Luiz have impressed in the past, but it could be a huge gamble for Real signing any one of the duo.
Luiz could the best thing since slice bread for Real next season, however. His ability to lead the defence could be helpful for Zidane’s side, while his impressive attacking threat makes him one of the most unique defenders in world football.
It remains to be if Real can hijack him from Chelsea in the summer.
