According to reports, Southampton are reportedly looking to challenge Arsenal in luring Brendan Rodgers back to the English Premier League.

The Saints are on the lookout for a new boss after sacking Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday evening. The Argentine boss leaves with the Saints just one point above the relegation zone after failure to win their last four Premier League games.

According to the Scottish Sun, Southampton vice-chairman Les Reed is said to be an admirer of the Hoops boss and will push for his consideration. However, despite the Saints interest in Rodgers, Mark Hughes is the current odds-on bookmakers’ favourite, while ex-Watford and Hull City boss Marco Silva is also said to be in the hunt.

Brendan Rodgers is currently on a four-year, £2.5million-per-season contract at Parkhead and has previously stated his long-term commitment to the reigning Scottish Premiership champions.

Rodgers, Allegri, Jardim and Simeone will all be courted by any Premier League clubs looking for a new manager this summer, and three of them could end up in London. Yet if the two sides all have vacancies at the same time, summer, and three of them could end up in London. Yet if Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs all have vacancies at the same time, the decline under Wenger would make it difficult for the Gunners to get the man they want.

The managerial race could end up being another one in which Arsenal have fallen behind their big rivals.
