Sunderland are looking to release Jack Rodwell and Celtic have been the reported destination for the former England international this January.
According to the Chronicle, the Black Cats are looking to terminate his contract midway through the season.
Everything seems to have gone wrong for Rodwell since his sliding doors from Everton for Manchester back in 2012 and this is just another low in a career of almost incessant troughs for the attacker.
Back in the summer of 2014, Sunderland paid £10 million for his services, but it took him another three years to win a Premier League fixture in which he had started. And, with consistent injuries restricting his playing time to just Championship appearances all season, the Black Cats are desperate to get him off the wage bill.
It is said that Sunderland, who are set for another relegation in the Championship this season, cannot afford to carry a £70,000-a-week white elephant on their backs.
But while the Wearside fans are unsurprisingly not too disappointed about Rodwell’s potential exit this month, fans of Celtic have reacted strongly to reports that he could be on his way to Parkhead in a real shock switch.
Reports garnered from The Sunderland Echo reveals that Celtic have been monitoring his situation and could make a move for Rodwell, just a few months after Brendan Rodgers tried to sign the player on loan.
Back in his day, Rodwell was a talented prospect and a player, who at just 26, could still find his scoring boots and get back on track with Celtic.
But it seems this signing would be far from popular in the Parkhead for Celtic fans. See out some Football Weeks‘ selected reactions on Twitter and let us know your thoughts in the comment box below:
I have absolutely no interest in seeing Jack Rodwell play for Celtic.

These Jack Rodwell rumours are right out of left field. His career has flattered to deceive after lots of hype and above all else the one place we DON'T need to add to is the middle of the park. We're overloaded with central midfield options. #Celtic #COYBIG pic.twitter.com/CYnY4bzIYQ

This guy was highly rated as a youngster breaking onto the scene. 26 now, and earns 70k a wk. Don't see this one happening

He just got released today. Has had fitness issues lately. Could be worth a trial
