Gael Clichy’s exit from Manchester City has seen become a free agent while Kolo Toure has once again led his team at Celtic to a massive success this season, but why are the rest of the Arsenal Invincible’s unheard of?
Thirteen years has gone by since the Gunners had an unbeaten run in the Premier League and claimed the title glory.
As Clichy and Toure comes out of hiding and began to make waves in the news, we examine what became the Invicibles
Jens Lehmann
After he said his goodbyes at Arsenal and moved to Stuttgart in 2008, Lehmann moved back to the Emirates coming out of retirement for a season. He played his last competitive game at the club, starting for the first team in a 3-1 away win at Blackpool.
Lehmann now lives in Germany where he works as a television pundit.
Ashley Cole
Cole quit Arsenal amidst controversy for a move to London rivals Chelsea in 2006 but his talent did not diminish as he helped the Bleus to a league title and four FA Cups, a League Cup, the Champions League and the Europa League.
He left Stamford Bridge for Italian outfit Roma when his contract expired in 2014, and he is now a part of MLS club LA Galaxy
Sol Campbell
Leaving Arsenal for Portsmouth in 2006, he forged ahead and had another feather to his cap winning a second FA Cup in 2008. He then signed a five year deal with Notts County but walked out of the club three days after his debut and moved back to Arsenal in January 2010
He made 14 more appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side before he transferred to Newcastle United in 2010-11 where he final dropped his playing boot.
Since his retirement, he became increasingly interested in politics, media punditry and also coached Trinidad and Tobago notional team.
Kolo Toure
Toure had a few year stint at Manchester City and Liverpool after he left Arsenal in 2009, and this season at Celtic has been exceptional for him, setting a record of being the first player in the history of British football to have an undefeated run in a season for two different clubs.
The Ivorian would probably be staying beyond this season at the club and could probably be employed into Brendan Rodgers’ coaching staff.
Lauren
Alongside Campbell, Lauren transferred to Portsmouth in 2006, and was also part of the team that won the FA Cup in 2008.
His retirement came when he was with Spanish club Cordoba and is now working with Sky Sports’ Spanish football coverage as a television pundit.
Robert Pires
Pires moved to Villareal in 2006 where he clashed with his old side in the Champions League in 2009.
Pires returned to English football with Aston Villa in 2010. In 2014, Pires promoted the alunch of the Indian Super League and was signed by FC Goa, becoming their marquee signing.
The Frenchman is set to make an appearance at this summer’s Star Sixes tournament at the O2 for France.
Patrick Vieira
The Invincibles’ skipper left the Emirates stadium to Juventus in 2005. During his time at Juventus, his team played against Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals and was defeated. Juventus falling into relegation saw him leave the club before hanging up his boots at Manchester City in 2011.
In 2013, Vieira was appointed as the club’s new reserve team and Elite Development squad manager at City. In 2015, Vieira was announced as the new head coach Major League Soccer club New York FC, where he is till date coaching the likes of Andrea Pirlo and David Villa.
Gilberto Silva
Being an unacknowledged player among the Invincibles, Silva opted out of the Gunners team in 2008 after winning the Premier League and two FA Cups during his six season spell at the club. He moved to Panathinaikos making 70 appearances for the Greece side before joining Gremio in 2011 in his homeland Brazil.
Gilberto, who was training back at Arsenal in January 2014, was most recently at his boyhood club, Atletico Mineiro, who he helped win the prestigious 2013 Copa Libertadores.
In December 2015, after two idle years, he officially announced his retirement intending to stay in the game as an international consultant for players and clubs.
Gilberto will be appearing alongside Pires at Star Sixes this summer.
Freddie Ljungberg
After departing Arsenal for a season at West Ham United in 2007, Ljungberg went off the radar and would go on to spells at Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire before returning to Europe with a short stint at Celtic in 2011.
After he left Arsenal and had a season spell at West Ham United in 2007, Ljungberg took a hiatus away from football and came back as a part of Seattle Sounders.
In January 2016 Ljungberg returned to the Emirates as a coach for their under 15s academy side to train for UEFA coaching badge. He currently works as the assistant coach at German club VFL Wolfsburg.
Thierry Henry
Arsenal’s highest goalscorer moved to Barcelona in 2007 and went on to win the treble with the La Liga giants in 2009. He moved to the MLS with New York Red Bulls in 2010 before enduring a loan spell at his former side Arsenal in 2012.
After his retirement at New York Red Bulls at the end of the 2014 season, he took up working as a pundit for Sky Sports.
Dennis Bergkamp
Like Henry, a statue of Bergkamp was unveiled outside the Emirates Stadium to honour his contribution to the Arsenal’s success. The Dutchman was last involved in the club for their Champions League final loss to Barcelona in 2006 where he was on the bench for the whole of the game – but that should not disparage his ten years of service to Arsenal.
Bergkamp is now the assistant manager at Boyhood club and has been excelling at the job. There have been whispers that he would be Arsene Wenger’s successor at Arsenal.
Best of the rest
Edu
Edu was the most used substitute in the 2003-04 season compared to any other Arsenal player, before he moved on in 2005. He is now part of the management team at his former club Corinthians.
Ray Parlour
Played 25 games for the club. Including appearances as substitute, in 2003-04 which was his final season in Arsenal shirt. He now works as a media pundit for Sky Sports.
Sylvain Wiltord
Despite having only eight start in the 2003-04 season, which was his final season at the club, he was able to pick up three goals. His move away from Arsenal saw him having short spells with different French clubs before he retired in 2012.
Jose Antonio Reyes
