Liverpool have had a mixed season so far but are still aiming to win the Premier League. They are currently third on the Premier League table, same points with Tottenham and seven points behind leaders Chelsea.

The Reds are not too far from the summit of the table and are still very much in the title race. However their title bid could suffer a hitch as they risk a potential points deduction if they choose to play Joel Matip in the FS Cup clash with Plymouth Argyle on Wednesday night.

The situation surrounding the summer signing is confusing and could result in Liverpool losing points. He was left out the team that played Man United on Sunday with Liverpool releasing a statement to that effect and they are yet to get any response from FIFA if he is eligible to feature against Plymouth.

The former Schalke defender announced his retirement from international football a year ago but his country Cameroon still went ahead to include him in the team selected for the African Cup of Nations currently going on.

When he refused to honour their invitation Cameroon reached out to FIFA seeking that the player will not be able to feature for the Reds till the AFCON is over.

According to reports, Liverpool may try to get clear answer from the football governing body before selecting the team for the FA Cup match. If Matip is involved in the match, he could be suspended and Liverpool could be fined as well as losing points.
