Dele Alli double header brought down the curtain on Chelsea’s winning streak and halted their attempt to make Premier League history with a 14th consecutive victory.
The Blues had been on 13 matches winning trot and were looking forward to go one better past Arsenal who had held the record for 14 years but Tottenham deservedly had the last laugh as they won 2-0 at White Hart Lane.
Antonio Conte’s men last defeat came at Arsenal back in September and Italian boss switched to the 3-4-3 formation which no team had been unable to breach until their loss to Tottenham.
Conte was short of ideas as his men couldn’t find a way past a resilient Tottenham’s defence despite using all his three substitutions.
Spurs moved up to third place, pushing another London rival Arsenal out of the top four but Chelsea still maintained their five points lead ahead of Liverpool which will be “glad tidings” to Jurgen Klopp.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side has been impressive since their defeat at Chelsea winning four games in a row, including two 4-1 wins against Sunderland and Watford and they ensured that Chelsea will not end that like they did the last time they met.
They took the lead like they did in their 1-2 loss at Stamford Bridge but they ensured that they did not only protect their lead but also snatched all the three points.
Dele Alli put his side ahead with a header from Christian Eriksen cross in the 45th minutes and doubled their lead less than 10 minutes after restart in a similar fashion by the pair. The goals by the 20-year-old made it seven goals in his last four games and the third time in succession he has scored twice in a game having done the same at Southampton and Watford.
Eden Hazard had two chances either half but spurned them. Both Conte and his players will be bitterly disappointed that they could not achieve their target record.
