Steven Gerard is set to call time on his career at MLS side LA Galaxy after his contract expires. The former England midfielder joined LA Galaxy after a career that span almost two decades at Liverpool where he won almost all the major trophies excluding the Premier League.
The former Liverpool midfield general with over 700 appearances to his name could be set for a return to the Anfield Stadium probably to give the last shot at winning the league title that eluded him throughout his stay at the Merseyside.
No doubt, he is loved by the club and fans who are convinced their former captain could still put on the jersey of the club which he adored so much and he had spent most of his career moving to the MLS.
But whether he is wanted by the club or not returning to Anfield could be disastrous. Where would he fit in Jurgen Klopp free-flowing system or how would he even fit into system? Klopp has transformed the club to title contenders and are currently on top of the Premier League table just a little over a year that he joined the cub
The fact is Gerard is past his best and his return would affect the already balanced squad. Adam Lallana is currently occupying his position and he is thriving in that area. The English midfielder has formed a formidable quartet with Philippe Coutinho Roberto Firmino and Saido Mane. Also Lucas Leiva Emre Can and Jordan Henderson are all ahead of him in the pecking order.
Liverpool have a chance of lifting the league this season and it is obvious that Gerard would desperately want to add it to his career before he retires. But he has already been paid goodbye and the farewell speech has been sad, and it will be better if it remains that way. His return may throw the team off their balance.
