Bayern Munich confirmed on Wednesday that 2018 world cup winner Lucas Hernandez will link-up with the team by the end of this season, having reached an €80m deal with Atletico Madrid for his signature.
According to the Bundesliga Champions, the Frenchman will join them after this campaign and he will be officially unveiled to the fans as their most expensive player.
Hernandez’s switch to the Allianz Arena will no doubt add more youthfulness and more quality to Niko Kovač’s side, however, his arrival could mean the end of the road for David Alaba’s successful career with The Bavarians.
The Austria’s 6-time player of the year has been a regular figure at Bayern’s left-back position since 2011-2012 season.
Considering the huge amount of money splashed by Bayern Munich on Hernandez, Kovač will definitely want to give him a spot in his starting lineup. This means that Alaba’s dominance at the left-back position is just about to end.
It remains unknown what his decision would be — whether to remain under Kovac’s watch and fight for his place or to move elsewhere.
Alaba is one of the most reliable defenders in the world, hence, he won’t lack suitors if he decides to end his stay with Bayern Munich.
Reports claimed that Barcelona are currently monitoring the player’s situation with the hope of launching a bid for his services in the summer.
Should he remain at Allianz Arena to fight for his place, then, he will need to up his game because Hernandez is a young player who is too good to be on any manager’s substitute bench.
Alaba has played 24 league matches for Bayern this season, while Hernandez has featured in 14 La Liga games for Atletico Madrid.
