Chris Powell believes that Leeds United will be able to push for promotion to the Premier League if they manage to make some good signings in January.
Leeds endured a poor run of form that saw them lose seven games out of a possible nine in the Championship, and dropped well out of ranking.
But a recent revival of form has seen the Whites win two out of their last three – the loss coming against league leaders Wolves – to catapult themselves back up the table into eighth position.
Leeds, led by Thomas Christiansen, now find themselves just three points off Powell’s former side club Derby, who sit in sixth position.
Powell thinks Christiansen’s side are all set to achieve promotion this season, but said that Leeds boss would need to bring in some new faces to the club in January.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Powell said: “As I’ve always said, this league can quickly turn your form around. They’ve been going through a spell now that they didn’t foresee, but they’ve picked up again. What’s happened is indicative of what happens in the Championship.
“We’ll see what happens with Leeds because Christensen is a new manager. He’s getting used to how competitive the league is. I’m sure with maybe one or two additions in January they’ll still be fighting for a top six spot.”
F/W’s view
The essence of Chris Powell’s comments, essentially that the Championship cannot be predicted, is the key here. When it gets to the business end of the season, there could possibly be ten teams going for those four play-off spots. And Leeds are well in with a shout. As long as Christiansen’s men can avoid another poor run like the one they recently endured, and keep picking up wins in every match, then they head to the play-offs. Powell is probably right in saying the Whites need a couple of new signings, and if they sign the right players, then that will make Christiansen’s job a whole lot easier.
