It would have gotten worse for Liverpool had Diego Costa not missed a penalty for Chelsea and had to settle for a draw at Anfield, making them to lose the opportunity to extend their lead at the top to double figures.

Jurgen Klopp and his men have suffered three consecutive defeats at home prior this match which saw them being eliminated from the EFL and FA Cup competitions against Southampton and Wolves respectively as well as losing more ground in the Premier League title race.

A high-flying Liverpool has defeated a struggling Chelsea in the reverse fixture in September but a change that catapulted the Blues to the top of the league has taken place since them.

However, Klopp will be happy to have avoided another defeat. The German coach has been able to maintain his excellent record against Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea in the league since he was appointed.

David Luis gave Chelsea the lead in the 24th minute via a free-kick before Georginio Wijnaldum drew Liverpool level 11 minutes after restart. Joel Matip brought down Diego Costa 14 minutes from time but the Spanish forward missed the resulting penalty kick as Simon Mignolet dived low to save it, abating another home loss for the Reds.

Roberto Firmino also wasted two golder chances for Liverpool, shooting over with the goal at his mercy and heading straight at Thibaut Courtois in the closing stages.

The draw means Klopp have been unbeaten in 15 matches against the top sis opponents, losing only once- to Manchester United last season.

However, Chelsea can solace from the results of their London rivals as Arsenal lost at home to Watford and Tottenham were held to a barren draw.
