Manchester United fans made case for Henrikh Mkhitaryan after they voted him man of the match in the club’s 4-0 win over Feyenoord in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The former Borussia Dortmund playmaker who made only his second start of the season featured for 82 minutes before he was substituted and enjoyed the support of the fans. He won the man of the match with 11, 000 votes ahead of Wayne Rooney (3500) and Juan Mata (1000).
The Armenia international has endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford since his arrival this summer. He has been limited to the bench since being hauled off in the 1-2 loss to Manchester City in September. Jose Mourinho had never thought it wise to play him despite his team offensive woes.
His impressive displays for his home country in their 3-2 win in a qualifying match against Montenegro – their first in three years- had prompted United fans to clamour for his inclusion in the starting line up to face Arsenal last weekend buy they were disappointed as the Portuguese coach failed to start the 27-year-old. The Reds were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Gunners.
However, the attacker repaid the faith the fans have in him with some impressive displays as United ran out 4-0 winner against the Dutch side as they take a step closer to reaching the last 32 of the Europa League.
Mourinho was also full of praise for the midfielder with his displays. The fans will be looking forward to seeing him in the starting eleven as they face West Ham United in the Premier League this weekend. They are currently outside the top six and his inclusion may help revive their stuttering season.
