There has been a report linking Liverpool defender Joel Matip with a move away from the club recently, with Premier League rival Fulham believed to be keen on signing him.
The Cameroon forward joined Liverpool from Bundesliga side Schalke in 2016, having initially signed a pre-contract agreement in February that year.
However, since joining the Reds, Matip has never really nailed down a starting role at Anfield, and he has become somewhat renowned for being capable of clumsy mistake when he plays.
Whatever the fee Matip is getting sold for in January, it will be a profit for the Merseysiders, having signed him on a free transfer two years ago.
That said, here are three defenders the Reds could sign as replacement to Matip.
Matthijs De Ligt
Ajax defender De Lift is widely tipped to become one of the world’s greatest, and already been linked with a move to many top clubs across Europe.
De Ligt should blend easily and faster with Liverpool as he’s teammate with Virgil Van Dijk at international level, and the Holland starlet would command a major fee of around £60million plus.
Despite this hefty figure, the Holland defender could become an elite one for Liverpool, and be a regular for the team for the next ten years.
Kalidou Koulibaly
Koulibaly is an already proven star and the defender would walk into any great team presently.
Despite being linked with a move to Manchester United for an hefty £80million, he’s still a fair game in the transfer market and being at 27-years-old, the defender next move will be his biggest as he hunts for career accolades.
Harry Maguire
Harry Maguire, who was the star of England’s World Cup campaign, has recently signed a new contract and again would command a huge transfer fee.
The England international is capable of walking into Liverpool’s starting team, and would provide healthy competition to help contribute to the steady growth of Joe Gomez in Liverpool.
