Linked with a move to Wembley in the summer, would Leipzig’s Timo Werner now be an even better fit for Spurs?

Tottenham Hotspur built their success last season on some clear system in which their players knew their roles and were able to perform brilliantly as a result of this familiarity.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino effectively stick to a 3-4-3 system that helped his side finished second in the Premier League behind Chelsea – a side who also reaped the rewards of the same formation.

This essentially saw Harry Kane as the focal point in attack, which is little surprise when the England international netted 29 goals in 30 league appearances.

However, part of this reliance on Kane was due to a lack of other options upfront, with Vincent Janseen failing to impress. This season, though, the Argentine boss has started to introduce two upfront by partnering both Fernando Llorente and Son Heung-min with the England forward.

It shows how Spurs are are constantly developing under Pochettino but this perhaps opens the door to a new forward potentially being signed. With two slots to fill, a new attacker at the Wembley Stadium would get more first team opportunities.

Which is why Tottenham should perhaps renew their interest in RP Leipzig’s Timo Werner, who according to The Sun was on their radar back in the summer.

Timo Werner RB Leipzig v Bayer Leverkusen

Still only 21-years-old, the young German has been in brilliant form since his 2016 move to Leipzig, netting 29 goals in 29 appearances and also a further six goals in eight appearances for Germany.

Werner represented Germany at youth level, playing for the Die Mannschaft U15, U16, U17, U19 and U21 teams, scoring 34 goals in 48 matches overall. In 2010, the 21-year-old scored a hat-trick on his first appearance for Germany U15 in a match against Poland. Werner earned the call up to the Germany senior squad in March, when head coach Joachim Löw introduced him in Germany’s friendly against England and played the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan on 22 March and 26 March 2017 respectively.

Werner was part of the squad that travel to Russia for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup held in Russia. He came in as a substitute for Sandro Wagner in the team’s opening game of the tournament against Australia before scoring his first two international goals when earning in his first international start in Germany’s final group match against Cameroon on 25 June.

With Timo Werner’s ability to also work the channels, he could also operate in a 3-4-3 system as well as a 3-5-2 and would bolster what is already an impressive Tottenham’s squad.
