Arsenal’s team needs ‘major surgery and the Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has got to spend heavily’ in the summer if chose to remain as the team manager, according to former Arsenal player Ray Parlour.

The Emirates club recent run of disappoint performances had a new look this weekend as they lost 3-1 away at West Brom – their fourth defeat in Five Premier League games.

The result show how slack the north London club is, and this has seen them down to sixth place – six points adrift of the Champions League – with the French boss admitting after the game that he’d never experienced a run of poor form like this in his 21-year tenure in-charge of the club.

Meanwhile, there are still questions over his futurue with the club.

New reports are suggesting the Gunners manager is set to sign a new deal to remain with Arsenal for another TWO YEARS, despite calls from a large section of fans chanting for him to leave when his current deal with the Gunners expires at the end of the season.

But whatever Wenger’s decision maybe, three-time Premier League champion and Arsenal legend Ray Parlour believes the current Gunners squad is totaling off the pace and in need of urgent rehabilitation when the transfer window opens.

“If Wenger does stay, there has got to be major surgery in the summer,” the Gunners legend told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“There has got to be quite a few players leaving and they’ve got to spend big in the transfer window.

“They’ve got to break the bank. If Sanchez leaves, and it looks like he will be leaving at this stage, they’ve got to replace him and they just need to buy more quality.

“[Shkodran] Mustafi – what’s happened to him? He started off so well alongside [Laurent] Koscielny, but ever since he came back from injury it looks like he’s brother has been playing every week, it’s not been him.

“[Granit] Xhaka is ok, but does he have that quality you really need in that central midfield area?

“If Wenger does stay, he has got to go to the board and say, ‘we need to spend’. He MUST spend.”

There were claims at the weekend that the result at the Hawthorns proves the Arsenal stars are no longer playing for their manager and want him to leave.

But Parlour disagrees, with the former Highbury favourite adding:

“You can definitely say they didn’t turn up at the weekend, they weren’t playing for him against West Brom.

“But I’m not too sure he’s completely lost the dressing room yet.”
