A 44-year-old record was broken on Saturday as Wayne Rooney overtook Sir Bobby Charlton to become Manchester United top scorer with 250 goals in 546th appearance. The forward came off the bench to score the equalizer against Stoke City deep into injury time.
Sir Charlton had been the top scorer since 1973 with 249 goals in 758 games but the attacker’s efforts against the Potters which rescued a point for his side saw him become the new top scorer for the club. And he did that with a style as his stunning free-kick did the trick.

Rooney who joined United from Everton in 2004 at the age of 18 can boast of a successful career at Old Trafford having won all the major trophies available. The FA Cup that had eluded him since the club was added to his collection of trophies last season.
The England skipper who has also broken Sir Charlton record as the Three Lion top scorer deserves to be called United legend. The club’s skipper and Michael Carrick are the only two players remained of the squad that won their last Champions league trophy in 2008 under Sir Alex Ferguson.
He has been an integral member of the team since joining, including under David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal but he has been limited this season by Jose Mourinho and that was only Rooney second Premier League goal of the season.
