Watford v Man Utd
Watford v Man Utd – Football Weeks

Jose Mourinho earned himself a respite when his side outclassed Burnley at Turf Moor. This important victory came for the team after suffering back-to-back defeats against Brighton & Hove Albion and against Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United are currently tenth in the league table after winning two games and losing two as well. The Red Devils will now be heading to Vicarage Road to end what for now is a 100 percent start to the season campaign for Watford.

Mourinho’s tactics

Jose Mourinho made an experiment in the Spurs match at home. Instead of his preferred 4-3-3 formation, he used the 3-3-3-1 formation against Mauricio Pochettino. The experiment totally failed as the Red Devils were beaten 3-0 at Old Trafford.

When Mourinho restored his preferred formation, the team got back on track and won easily against Burnley. Therefore, Mourinho is likely to retain the same formation against Watford. However, selecting the right players will be key to United’s victory against the Hornets.

The in-form Luke Shaw ruled himself out of the match after getting injured while playing in a match for England against Spain. Ashley Young seems to be the best fit at left-back while Antonio Valencia is likely to keep his right position. Since the Hornets are more likely to attack down the left-hand side, Valencia needs to be extra special in the match.

Marouane Fellaini

Victory at Turf Moor before the international break was very crucial for Mourinho who was receiving a lot of criticisms after back-to-back defeats. For this very important match, he dropped the newly signed Fred and brought in Marouane Fellaini.

In his pre-match explanation, Mourinho described Burnley as ‘physical’ and ‘direct’, and therefore the team needed “a little bit of Marouane physicality.”

This decision proved to be very successful for Mourinho as Fellaini played very well alongside Pogba and Matic. Fellaini was impressive for winning headers and making clearances. His arrival offered stability in the midfield region for United.

Mourinho should employ the same strategy against Watford because they are just as ‘physical’ and ‘direct’ as Burnley.

Difficult encounter for Mourinho

The history between the two teams clearly favors Manchester United for the next game. The Red Devils have won 20 times and lost only 5. While 5 matches also went to draw.

However, if we consider the current state of affairs, it is Watford who are looking better. They have already outclassed Brighton, Burnley and Crystal Palace. Even the Spurs team could not match Javi Gracia’s side. With four successive victories, they are currently at the third position in the Premier League table. The Hornets will be very confident to win the next match.
