With the summer window now shut and European football announced for the year, trending event in Glasgow now will be on the Old Firm derby on Sunday with Rangers’ new boss Steven Gerrard handed a chance to challenge Celtic and former boss Brendan Rodgers.
Celtic have had a somewhat dull activity this summer, which ended in disappointment with the Hoops striker and fan-favourite Moussa Dembele joining Olympique Lynnois as well as missing out on Champions League football.
Rangers, on the other hand, secured a spot at the Europa League competition and the Gers still remains unbeaten in all competitions under Gerrard. Rangers biggest test so far this season will be tomorrow when they travel to Celtic Park to take on their bitter rivals.
Rangers are tipped to make this a frustrating one for Celtic while making sure they secure a goal along the line but with the huge pressure at Celtic, there is no better time for Rodgers’ and his men to play Rangers and try beating them with an exceptionally attacking football.
As such, Steven Gerrard should field a 4-3-3 formation, with defensive favourite Jon Flanagan and winger Ryan Kent dropped in favour of young and pacey Borna Barisic and Kyle Lafferty.
Alan McGregor, who returns to Rangers in May on a two-year deal after rejecting new terms at Hull City, should start for Rangers between the sticks on Sunday.
A four man defence featuring Katic and Goldson starting at the heart of defence while Flanaga, who was sent off in the Europa League, should be replaced by Barisic at right-back and Tavenier maintaining his place in left-back.
In a three man midfield, this should be Scott Arfield, Ovie Ejaria and Ryan Jack, helping Rangers nullify the threat of Celtic’s own central stars, and the three midfielders boast of impressive ability in winning ball, they’re strong and have the technical skill and creativity to really make the difference.
At the top, the pace of Alfredo Morelos and Daniel Candeias should help Rangers in breaking Celtic’s defence, and if Kyle Lafferty can get the full support of those playing behind him, Rangers should really come out victorious at Celtic Park.
Prediction – 1-2
No one can really predict how this derby will turn out to be with new developments on both sides, but with this Steven Gerrard’s starting XI, one should backed Rangers earning all three points and wining by two goals.
