Liverpool are considering the need for a new defending options and could reportedly target Jurgen Klopp’s former player at Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool’s lack of options at the heart of defence has been exposed by a recent run of injuries, which has seen the duo of Joe Gomez and Dejan Loveren spend extended periods on the sidelines.

With that, Joel Matip has often be deployed at centre back to partner Virgil Van Dijk but has not particularly shown enough to make the role permanently.

Infact, Matip’s performance was so bad in defence he nearly scored an own goal against Bayern Munich in the Champions League as well as against Manchester United.

In light of this, The Sun reported in February that Jurgen Kloop would consider bringing in some defensive reinforcements in the summer. And it appears that the BVB’s centre back, is top of the German tactician list.

Klopp was in charge at Dortmund when the club signed Ginter from Freiburg back in 2014.

According to Goal, the Bundesliga side paid paid £9 million for the signing of Ginter, who was the youngest member of Germany’s 2014 World Cup winning squad.

Ginter, however, failed to live up to many expectations at Dortmund but has seen a rapid rise in form since making the switch to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017.

He has been a superb option for Monchengladbach at the heart of defence, with Dieter Hecking’s side sitting third in the table with the second best defensive record in the league.

Ginter joining Liverpool would spell the end of Matip at Anfield
