“Celtic’s best” – BBC journalist in defence to Celtic senior player after lost to Zenit

BBC pundit Tam McManus believes that Celtic skipper Scott Brown was Celtic’s best player in their 3-0 loss to Zenit, but he admitted that wasn’t anything to brag about.

Celtic showed a very poor performance in the match, as the Russians quickly overturned the one goal deficit from the first leg and ran out comfortable.

When asked on his personal Twitter page why wasn’t “raving” about Brown’s performance after the match, he came to Brown’s defence, to an extent.

Was still Celtic’s best player on the night. Not that it’s anything to shout about to be fair. Well beat”.

Celtic skipper struggled as Roberto Mancini’s side seemed determined to make corrections after their poor performance in the first leg in Glasgow.

The cause wasn’t helped by mistakes made by Jozo Simunovic and Dorus de Vries for Zenit’s first goals, which gave the Russian side a two goal lead at half-time.

Celtic were still in the game at that stage but a third Zenit goal on the hour killed the game spirit and saw Brendan Rodgers’ side exit Europe with a whimper. Scott Brown will need to pick himself up quickly, as Celtic are back in their league business on Sunday, when they take on an Aberdeen side who can cut the gap at the top of the league table to six points with a win at Pittodrie.
