Arsenal could agree deal with Porto for defender

According to AS, Arsenal could agree a deal with FC Porto for defender Miguel Layun. The 29-year-old, who has spent the last season on loan with Sevilla, is valued at £5.5m and is a natural right-back who can also play on the left when called upon.

Layun has made 80 appearances for the Portuguese outfit in all competitions but he’s fallen down the pecking order in the last 12 months, hence the loan move away. At Porto, the Mexico international was frequently left out of the starting line-up in domestic outings and an unused substitute in Europe.

Arsenal do have competition for his signature, however, with Italian Serie A giants AC Milan and French Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Marseilles both keen on the defender. The Gunners have added to their defence this summer with the signing of Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus on a free transfer, but Head of Recruitment Sven Mislintat has made strengthening the backline a priority.

Hector Bellerin and Lichtsteiner would surely be enough options at right-back for next season, so their interest in Layun may be down to his versatility. The 29-year-old has played left-midfield, right-midfield, central midfield and as a No.10. For £5.5m, Layun be a bargain for Arsenal given all his experience for club (300 career appearances) and country (64 caps).
