Simon Mignolet continued in goal as Liverpool left it late to snatch a win against Everton at the Goodison Park. The Belgian international was reinstated due to some woeful performances from Loris Karius which generated a hot argument between the Neville brothers and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp though the later succumbed to their pressure and dropped his compatriot for the 3-0 win over Middlesbrough. A move which did not go down well with the 23-year-old but has paid off for the Reds.
Mignolet repaid the faith Klopp had in with another clean slate performance as Liverpool defeated Everton 1-0 in the Merseyside Derby on Monday night.
Liverpool needed to close the gap at the top of the table and reignite their title race after an embarrassing loss to Bournemouth and frustrating draw at home with West Ham. With wins over Middlesbrough and Everton, they are now on 37 points and second on the league standings, six points behind leaders Chelsea.
Everton were still basking in the euphoria of their 2-1 win over Arsenal in the midweek and were looking for only their second win of their last 20 meetings with Liverpool. They thought they would take points off Liverpool as they did against Man United but Saido Mane’s goal deep into the injury time quench such thoughts.
Daniel Sturridge proved he is still relevant for the Reds when he struck the post with his shot and Mane was able to tap in from the rebound.
The excitement of that win clearly showed on Klopp and will be more delighted with his side’s fighting spirit.
