Liverpool are one of the prolific scoring side in the Premier League this season. Their attack has been flying high under Jurgen Kloppp. They have been impressive in the final third but despite that their defence does not portray that of a genuine title contender.
The hole in their back line was exposed in the 3-0 loss to Bournemouth over the weekend and that is a wake up call to Klopp to do something about that area of his team. The former Borussia Dortmund coach seems to be more interested in the attacking prowess of his team.
The attacking trio of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Saido Mane have been incredible and difficult to stop. Transfer news around the club has been more of attack than defence.
When Philippe Coutinho got injured, it was believed the Reds’ attack will suffer for it but they have showed in their last three matches without the Brazilian that they have a proven upfront. But with injury to Joel Matip, who has been spearheading the defence, it shows that the Merseyside need a defender more than an attacker.
Lucas Leiva who deputized for him was lost for a larger part of the Bournemouth match as the Reds conceded three goals in 14 minutes. Conceding goals at this alarming rate will cost them the title as it did in 2008/2009 and 2013/2014 seasons.
Two central defenders and a goalkeeper were signed in the summer but they don’t seem to have solved the Red’s defensive woes. Klopp needs to get a defender when the January transfer window opens.
