Five players Liverpool could sign to challenge Alexander-Arnold at right-back

England international Trent Alexander-Arnold was Liverpool’s first choice-right back last season, which proved to be a hefty task.

And with Nathaniel Clyne struggling with injuries, Liverpool are lacking depth in the right-back position.

If the Reds are challenging for a top-four finish next season, a new right-back is desperately needed this summer.

Here we take a look at five potential signings the Merseysiders could make to solve their problems at the back.

1. Alessandro Florenzi – AS Roma

Florenzi has spent his entire career at AS Roma and has flourished in the full-back role.

The Italian international would be an exciting option for Liverpool as he has the ability of a wing-back but also high the understanding to revert to a right-back when required.

Florenzi contributed five goals in 32 appearances last season, averaging one cross-per-game and completing 79.4% of his passes.

The 27-year-old could become a fan favourite at Anfield, but he wouldn’t come cheap. Liverpool might have to pay £50m to sign him this summer.

2. Serge Aurier – Tottenham Hotspur

Aurier’s first season at Tottenham hasn’t really gone as planned.

Instead of coming into Mauricio Pochettino’s team to replace departed Kyle Walker, the Ivorian is playing second fiddle to Kieran Trippier, making only 16 Premier League appearances last season.

Serge Aurier, Tottenham Hotspur right-back

It would come as no surprise seeing him considering a move away from Tottenham this summer as a result, and him joining Liverpool could be a good option.

Aurier’s aggression and committent would perfectly blend with Jurgen Klopp’s heavy-metal style.

The German boss heavily relies on his full-backs to bomb up and down the flanks, providing width and creating chances with crosses – something that makes Aurier the perfect candidate.

3. Michail Antonio – West Ham United

Antonio’s is an incredibly versatile player and one who could improve the Liverpool squad.

Over the course of his career, he has been deployed at right-back, wing-back, winger and even as a striker for West Ham.

The 28-year-old has always excelled regardless of what role he’s operated in. Antonio is a hard-working and pacey winger who would be successful playing at Anfield.

4. João Cancelo – Inter Milan

Since Cancelo joined Inter Milan on loan from Valencia last summer, he has contributed to four goals in 26 appearances for the Nerrazzurri.

The Portuguese international seldom relinquishes possession and is adept at passing, dribbling, crossing and creating chances.

Playing down the right flank at Liverpool, the player could form a formidable partnership with Mohamed Salah, providing width on the overlap while allowing Salah to cut inside.

5. Djibril Sidibé – AS Monaco

Djibril Sidibe is one of the best right-backs in Ligue 1. The 25-year-old can stop his opponent in a one-on-one and can play on the left side of the defence too.

It would be interested if the French international joined Liverpool this summer, as he could legitimately challenge Alexander-Arnold for a starting place next season.
