According to Fotbollskanalen via Daily Record, Celtic defender Mikael Lustig could miss Sunday’s league meeting with Rangers due to a broken toe. The 31-year-old missed Saturday’s defeat to Hibernian as a result of the injury and may not return in time for this weekend’s Old Firm derby.
It’s a big blow as Celtic could seal the title against their bitter rivals at Parkhead, edging one step closer to winning consecutive trebles under manager Brendan Rodgers. Lustig has played his part in their success, making 43 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring and creating five goals.
The Swedish international joined Celtic from Rosenborg BK in 2012 and has gone on to make 228 appearances, winning six league titles, two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups. If Lustig does miss out against Rangers, Jack Hendry is likely to take his spot, having replaced him against Hibernian.
The 22-year-old, who has played in 39 games this season, can operate at centre-back and right-back and might be required to fill in. The minor change shouldn’t affect Celtic too much, although their recent form has left a lot to be desired – two wins from their last five league games.
Nevertheless, they’re 10 points clear of second-placed Rangers ahead of Sunday’s meeting and will be crowned champions if they avoid defeat at Parkhead.
