BBC Pundit Steven Thompson slams Kieran Tierney after international performance

Celtic defender Kieran Tierney completed 80 minutes for Scotland on Monday night as their World Cup hope were ended and Steven Thompson was critical on his performance.

Robert Snodgrass managed a late goal to restore belief, but Scotland ended up missing out on goal difference in the group as their World Cup adventure came to an end.

The Scots went in front through Leigh Griffiths, before Roman Bezjak scored a double for the hosts.

Tierney has become a regular at international level for Scotland, but is often asked to play out of position.

The 20-year-old, who usually plays as a left-back for Celtic, filled in twice at right-back during the qualifiers over the international break.

Griffiths is a versatile defender that is highly-rated, but the left-footed ace looks far more comfortable on the left flank.

BBC pundit Thompson slammed the Scot’s performance after the draw to Slovenia and believes that he has struggled at right-back.

“The Celtic defender hasn’t looked as comfortable at right-back in these last two games,” Thompson said as quoted via BBC Sport. ”Booked early on for a poor challenge and didn’t offer a threat going forward likes he does for his club.”

F/W’s view

Kieran Tierney is outstanding for Celtic at left-back and it makes little sense to try forcing the ace into the Scots side out of position. Tierney should be ahead of Andrew Robertson right now in the pecking order, given that the Liverpool man is hardly getting a look in since his move to Anfield. Strachan has been criticised for several decisions throughout Scotland’s World Cup campaign and in fairness they pushed a strong Slovakia outfit all the way. However, the decision to play Tierney out of position is a strange one and doesn’t get the best out of the full-back.
